The General Medical Council (GMC), the future regulator for physician associates in the United Kingdom, is seeking two new members to join its governing Council.

The GMC is looking to recruit one lay-member of the public, and a healthcare professional to for a second role to join the GMC council. This is a significant opportunity to contribute to shaping healthcare policy and regulation at a pivotal time for the NHS.

The GMC plays a vital role in ensuring safe, high-quality patient care across the UK. With the upcoming regulation of physician associates and anaesthesia associates in December 2024, the Council will oversee a period of major reform that will impact how the GMC works with healthcare professionals and the public.

The Council is comprised of 12 members, with an equal balance of lay individuals and medical professionals. The two new positions will be responsible for setting strategic direction, defining key policies, and ensuring the GMC adheres to its statutory and charitable objectives.

Ideal candidates will possess strong leadership experience in navigating complex change within large organisations. Experience working with government or political entities is valued, while the registrant position specifically seeks a background in active clinical practice and leadership.

Applications are welcome from all across the UK, with a particular emphasis on attracting candidates from Wales due to the upcoming vacancy. The time commitment for these roles is approximately three days per month, with a remuneration package of £18,000 annually.

The closing date for applications to the GMC application is 12:00 noon, Monday 15 July 2024. With preliminary interviews commencing Thursday 8 August 2024 and a final panel interview on either Wednesday 30, and Thursday 31 October 2024.
