The anticipated House of Lords debate on the Anaesthesia Associates and Physician Associates Order 2024 (AAPAO 2024) has been rescheduled to Monday, February 26th.

Originally, the Anaesthesia Associates and Physician Associates Order 2024 was due before the House of Lords on 6th February 2024. However, it was delayed amidst concerns from some doctors about the choice of regulatory body and potential confusion created by the title “Physician Associate.”

Yesterday (7th February 2024), NHS England put out a letter recognising the valuable contributions of physician associates in delivering effective and efficient care, while operating within their defined scope of competence.

The Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA) continues to call for timely regulation of the PA profession, and stresses the importance of regulation for patient safety, smoother caseload management, and overall professional development. The FPA has pledged to continue to actively engage with stakeholders and the medical community, addressing concerns and ensuring the profession’s voice is heard.
